An air ball in basketball is a shot attempt that completely misses the rim, backboard, and net. It is considered a bad miss and is often accompanied by a groan or jeer from the crowd.

The term “air ball” comes from the fact that the ball only touches air.

An air ball is not considered a shot attempt if it touches the rim or backboard, even if it misses the basket.

The term “air ball” was first used in print in a 1967 article from the Daily Review. When an opposing player makes an air ball, it can prompt fans to chant “Aiiiir ball! Aiir ball!” repeatedly to humiliate the shooter.
