In basketball, a bonus free throw is awarded to a player when the opposing team has committed a certain number of fouls in a given period of time. This rule varies depending on the level of play, but in the NBA, the bonus is awarded on the fifth team foul in each quarter.
Once a team has reached the bonus, any subsequent fouls committed by that team will result in the opposing team being awarded two free throws instead of the usual one. This is known as the “double bonus.”
The bonus free throw is an important aspect of the game, as it allows teams to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes and potentially score additional points. It also incentivizes teams to play clean defense and avoid committing fouls, as giving up free points can be costly in a close game.
