A question that I get asked often is, what books can I read to make me jump higher?
Some people may think this is an odd question…
But books can be extremely helpful in the endeavor of increasing your vertical jump.
In this article, I will go through the top three books that will help you increase your vertical and jump to new heights. At the end of this article, I will even give you a bonus book that can take your game to the next level.
Why Vertical Jump Books?
Using books as a source to learn how to increase your vertical leap is a great idea…
Books tend to be cheaper than an expensive jump program…
Don’t get me wrong…
An excellent jump training program can do wonders for your game, and your vertical.
If you are interested in a jump program, check out my Vert Shock Review.
You can get a great book on how to increase your vertical for as cheap as $4…
The trick is knowing what books to get…
This is where I come in…
I will take all the guesswork out for you and give you the best books to increase your vertical and why you should buy them.
Don’t worry if you are not a big fan of reading, Check out Audible, you can listen to the books instead of reading them…
You get a 30-day free trial and free books every month…
1. “How to Dunk if You’re Under 6 Feet Tall: 13 Proven Ways to Jump Higher and Drastically Increase Your Vertical Jump in 4 Weeks”
This is the cheapest vertical jump book out of the three…
If you don’t think books are your thing or you don’t feel that books can help you dunk on your opponent and put them in a poster. I suggest you check this one out.
You will see some improvement with this book in your vertical jump.
The book is written by James Wilson, he is a 30-year-old veteran of basketball, and he has coached in 20 different countries.
This particular book is geared towards players that are under six-foot, promising that you will be dunking the basketball in just 4 weeks, no matter your athletic ability.
How to Dunk if You’re Under 6 Feet Tall goes through step-by-step the exercise that you will need to do in the 4 weeks…
All exercises are scientifically-backed, making this a trusted book.
If you are under six and want to learn how to jump higher…
I suggest that you give How to Dunk if You’re Under 6 Feet Tall a try.
The only downside to this book is that it does not go into detail about nutrition.
I say this because nutrition is a vital part of reaching your full dunking potential.
2. “Jump Attack: The Formula for Explosive Athletic Performance, Jumping Higher, and Training Like the Pros“
This book is special, written by Tim Grover, who trained Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
By training those two legendary players, Tim Grover has the reputation of being one of the best trainers in the game.
Grover has a jump formula he calls The “Jump Attack Formula for Flight”…
Within this formula, you will have everything that you need to take flight and become a better jumper…
The Jump Attack Workout is broken down into three phases over 12 weeks…
- Fire
- Force
- Flight
During these 12 weeks, Tim Grover goes over training, nutrition, longevity, injury prevention, and more…
What I like about this book so much is that it goes over injury prevention and nutrition; most books will not go over these…
These two sections are overlooked, even though they are very important to increase your vertical.
There is even a Jump Attack Q & section that is really helpful.
Don’t worry about losing your gains after the 12 weeks either…
The last section of the book is a maintenance phase to make sure you don’t lose any inches on your vertical after the program.
What better way to learn how to be an explosive jumper than learning from who the pros like Micheal Jordan and Kobe Bryant learned from?
It’s hard to answer that question…
Because there is no better way. By trying this book out, it is like you are stepping into an NBA player’s shoes with Tim Grover right by your side, helping you reach your dream of dunking a basketball.
After this book, not only will you have an increased vertical, but you will have increased quickness, endurance, and explosive power.
3. “Vertical Foundations: The Physiology, Biomechanics, and Technique of Explosive Vertical Jumping“
This is, by far, my favorite book on the list.
It might be because it goes through the science of how to jump higher and what roles your muscles play.
To give you an example of the types of information found in the Vertical Foundation, it describes the role of your Central Nervous system in jumping and what drills will positively or negatively affect your vertical, making you a low or high jumper.
This book focuses on the biomechanics of jumping, and the book breaks these down into sections. For example, standing vertically, running with single leg jumping, and running with double leg jumping…
By doing this, the book gives you the tools to become a better jumper, no matter how you jump.
The books describe the different types of jumpers and techniques to get the most out of jumping…
This is great because not all jumpers are the same.
Ask any dunker, how important technique is…
They will say it is one of the most essential elements of dunking…
Technique alone can add inches to your vertical.
In-game, you may have to jump off one or two legs depending on the situation…
With this book, you will have no problem reaching your max potential with double or single legs jumps.
Vertical Foundations even goes over speed vs. force dominates…
Which is a fascinating subject, in my opinion.
What makes this book so unique and separates it from the others on the list is that it does all this in a more clear and more concise matter.
This book will help you defy gravity by giving you the knowledge of mental training and proper technique.
If you want to jump higher and have the perfect technique, this is a must-read.
Bonus: Basketball Anatomy
This is the bonus I promised you, I hope you are ready…
This book is not geared strictly to increasing your vertical but how to maximize your impact on the court by increasing your strength, agility, and quickness…
Basketball Anatomy does this by showing how to perform every movement so that it is optimized for efficiency.
With 88 basketball exercises that have a step-by-step guide on how to do the exercise with a full-color anatomical picture to show you the muscle in action.
Each exercise shows you how it relates to basketball skills.
Rebounding, pivoting, and shooting are all basketball movements that involve a lot of moving muscles. These motions are fundamentally a part of basketball, and Basketball Anatomy shows you how these movements and muscles are linked.
My favorite section of this book is when it talks about common injuries and how to prevent and recover from these injuries…
Such injuries include ankle injuries, knee injuries, and shoulder injuries.
this is so important because injuries need to be minimized as much as possible…
Also, when an injury does happen, hopefully, it never does, it needs to be recovered properly.
The book is excellent for anyone who is trying to maximize their impact on the court to perform at a high level.
